Wild and Free Foundation - Leopards spend most of their time on land

Updated: May 18, 2021

The Wild and Free Foundation has come to a conclusion that leopards spend the majority of their time on land. This is contrary to what many people may believe, as photos show them in trees, but evidence suggests that they are primarily found on the ground. To avoid being hunted by scavengers or killed by predators, leopards use trees only as an escape option when necessary. Scientists inferred this information from studying video footage of known leopard habitats and comparing it to data collected from camera traps set up at known tree nests. They also studied the location where prey had been killed and found leopard tracks leading away from the kill site; all signs suggesting that leopards spend more time on land than in trees.
